Hypomyces chrysospermus Tul. & C. Tul., Annls. Sci. Nat. Bot., se’r. 4 13: 16, 1860. 

Anamorph: Sepedoniumchrysospermum (Bull.) Fr., Syst. Mycol. 3: 438, 1832.

Teleomorph in nature: Subiculum effuse, orange(5YR7/14) to brownish orange(5YR7/6), grayish red(10R6/8), covering entire surface of hymenium; hymenial hyphae (2-)3-5 μm in widt, parenchymatous, septate, thick-walled and KOH (-). Perithecia pale yellow(5Y9/2) to pastel yellow(5Y9/4), ellipsoidal to broadly ellipsoidal, (165-)251-284×(205-)251-310 μm, born in groups harf-immersed in the mycelia; papilla conical, 46-66(-79)×(79-)112-145 μm. Asci cylindrical, (83-)99-109(-117)×4-5(-6) mm, eightspored with a stalk 11-19 (-30.5) μm long, forming a pore at the slightly thick-walled apex.　Ascospores hyaline, fusiform, always unequally two-celled, (13.5-)17-21×(3-)5-5.5 μm, verrucose with warts of <0.5 mm in diameter, apiculate but rounded at both ends; apiculi 0.5-1(-2) μm long. 

Characteristics in culture: Colonies on MEA, grow rapidly to reach 50-63 mm in diameter. after 7 days at 25oC, tomentosus, cadmium orange(10YR7/14) to brownish yellow(10YR7/8), margins dentate, odor moldy, reverse brownish yellow(10YR7/10) to  orange(10YR8/10). Hyphae are hyaline or pale yellow, (5Y9/2), septate, thick-walled, (2.5-)4-5(-7.5) μm. Conidiophores born from aerial hyphae, semi-macronematous, septate, slightly thick-walled, two to three times branched irregularly, 2-4 μm wide, forming conidiogenous cells at the apex. Conidiogenous cells born at the apex or laterally as a well-developed verticil of 3-4(5) on the conidiophores, hyaline, (17.5-)27.5-47.5(-97.5) × 1.5-4 μm, lanceolate, gradually tapering into the narrow apex of 0.5-1 mm in width. Conidia clusters from the apex of conidiogenous cells, hyaline, aseptate, long ellipsoidal to ellipsoidal, thin-walled, smooth, (4-)10-12.5(-20)×(2-)3-5(-7.5) μm. Chlamydospores produced laterally on the substrate hyphae or terminally at the apex of the branches, light yellow(5Y9/6) to  vivid yellow(5Y8/14), verrucose, globose, (10-)12.5-15(-20) μm in width.
